What Do Participants in The Kennedy Center's Therapeutic Recreation/Life Skills Program Do?

Ask any of the 350 people who participate monthly!
Make Their Own Choices - Explore Their Potential - Develop Their Own Plans
- Pursue a new hobby - develop new skills - learn to read; start an exercise program; work out/swim at the Y; participate at local community centers; Libraries, Continuing Education Programs; Social Skills, Cooking and other classes.
- Meet with a TR staff member to decide and plan leisure time activities and figure out how to make this happen.
Contribute To The Greater Community
- Train to be a volunteer and select a site to work in from an animal shelter, to a soup kitchen, a school, to your local community center …you pick it!
Explore The Great Outdoors
- Rough it on a 3 day camping trip; hike trails at State Parks; comb the beach for shells on beach walks; brave a winter hike and a winter creature tour.
Go Out On The Town
- Garlic Fest; Greek Festival; Country fairs in Durham, North Haven, Orange; Town Green Concerts and Picnics; Movies and Dinner; Coffeehouses; Country Line Dancing; Billiards
See The World
- Check out the opportunities at a Summer Vacation Expo; Pick a dream location and plan a trip to it:
- Create a vacation during the Great Outdoors Week; Classic Country Towns and Sports Mania Week; travel to a Lake George Dude Ranch, Cape Cod, and Cooperstown.
Participate in the Cultural, Sports and Entertainment Life throughout Connecticut
- Theater Jaunts to the Quick Center, Schubert, Downtown Cabaret Theater, Sacred Heart University
- Museum Trips to the Discovery Museum, Housatonic Museum of Art, Lockwood Mansion, Bruce Museum, Pequot Museum, Maritime Center/IMAX, Garbage Museum
- Root for favorite teams – the Bluefish; college basketball, Sound Tiger hockey games
Be with Friends and Make New Friends
- Form and join support groups – from the 20’s Groups to the Women's Health Issues Group
- Be a member of the Sunshine Club and "touch base" with others who lost a loved one, are hospitalized or recuperating at home; welcome new Kennedy Center participants
- Be matched with a Best Buddy through Fairfield University
- Stop in at the weekly evening Drop-In Center
